Hi! So glad you are here. I can see you are interested in musical production and composition. Let me tell you, creating music is one of the most rewarding experiences you can ever have. Whether you are an aspiring competitive composer, or just want to develop your talent, I would be delighted to get you started on your journey. Let’s get down to it.

There are many avenues in which you can choose to begin your learning. I strongly suggest starting on the piano.

How Basic Skills in Piano Can Take You Far in Music Composition

The piano is an amazingly diverse instrument that has lasted the ages…and for a reason. The piano is easily learned and fortunately, you don’t need to be a professional pianist to be a great producer. Just understand and familiarize yourself with its layout and you will be well off on a good start. Keep in mind, though, piano is easily learned, it’s difficult to master. You will progress very quickly in these beginning stages. But of course, the theory and technical will become more difficult as you advance. Do not become frustrated if you do decide to evolve your skills in piano past the novice level. I promise you, it’s all for your benefit.

This is exactly how I began. I familiarized myself with the piano by practicing to the tunes of my favorite songs on the radio and memorized the order of keys to those songs. Later on, I decided to memorize every key on the piano. It’s a lot easier than it sounds, I promise. I was 8 years of age when I did this.

Knowing these basics is crucial to the success of any musician. Think of today’ top hits on the radio. I guarantee you most of those songs are 4 chord progressions that were created through some kind of piano or organ instrument. Do a google search on ” Music production” and click images. Notice what those artists have in front of them.

You are absolutely able to teach yourself piano. You may not have a musical bone in your body, but even than, you can learn this instrument, and you can create powerful music with this essential tool. I as a self-taught pianist, can testify to that. Below I will attach a link to get you started.

You Can Be a Master in the Musical Industry

Fast forwards a few months. Because of your diligent practice, you now have a good foundation to start composing your own music. Through your studies, you now have basic knowledge of musical theory, and basic knowledge in an instrument in which you can begin painting your masterpiece(s). But your challenges are far from over. Music takes time and requires an immense amount of patience. Remember the 10,000 hour rule? With that being said, let us begin the next phase.

Build your DAW

It’s now time to build your digital audio workstation or DAW for short. Ultimately, you as the artist get to decide what you require to record music. But there are definitely a few items I could never record music without. A computer, midi keyboard, music production software and a nice set of studio speakers or headphones. You can find all of these items for less than $1000. Good qualities items at that. Make sure to do your research and stick with a budget!

There are a lot of good musical production software out there. But I recommend these 3

– Fl Studios 12: Extremely user-friendly. Gives you a platform to create anything from beats, recordings, melody, you name it. This a $200 software but well worth it if you’re serious about composing music.

Ableton Live: Ableton Live 9 was the first music production software I ever used. It’s not quite as user-friendly as FL Studios, but is incredibly intuitive. The Ableton company routinely posts tips and training videos on their website that are very helpful and insightful regardless of the software you are using. Be sure to check them out! This software ranges from $100 to $800, But, you can download the lite version of Ableton Live for free!

Garage Band: I would be very surprised if you’ve never heard of garage band, as it’s usually available on most Apple devices. Garage band is crazy affordable and you can create music without an instrument. I know artists personally that prefer garage band as their primary DAW. And they’ve made some fire tracks!

Don’t Just Take My Word For It… Listen to these Artists

If you can, try to find community of artists that are willing to share their experiences and give insight. I have found this extremely eye-opening in my musical career. Please view these videos for more information on equipment and mastering your craft.
